The HUMAN DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION's Mercy Center was established 1973 in Bangkok's slaughterhouse district. It is home to about 200 street children, orphans, and children living with HIV as well as a kindergarten and pre-school. Spending two months a year in the center over the last four years, photographer Vanessa von Zitzewitz has documented the children's struggles and joys in her moving black and white images. This book is a tribute to the Center's founder, Father Joseph H. Maier, and his work over the past 36 years.
Vanessa von Zitzewitz is a leading advertising and portrait photographer. She has published books for Cartier and Graff, as well as a book of black-and-white portraits, Monachrome.
