Gregory Colbert Selected Works 1992 - 2005
The Canadian-born artist began his career in 1983 in Paris making documentaries on social issues, which led to his fine art photography. Colbert travelled to far-off destinations to film and photograph wondrous interactions between humans and animals, during which he did not publicly show his films or exhibit his photographs. Since 1992, he has launched more than 40 expeditions to such places as India, Burma, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Dominica, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tonga, Namibia, and Antarctica. Elephants, whales, leopards, and saltwater crocodiles are among the animals he has photographed. Human subjects include Burmese monks, trance dancers, and Colbert himself free-diving with whales.
The first public debut of Colbert’s lifelong project, Ashes and Snow, was the largest solo exhibition ever mounted in Italy. Since its debut in 2002, the exhibition has traveled to five world capitals and has attracted more than 1.5 million visitors. These stunning photographs constitute the artist’s personal selection from expeditions between 1992 and 2005.
