For the fourth time Eddy van Wessel has won the prestigious Dutch photography award “The Silver Camera” for his important work in Ukraine.
Van Wessel’s gripping work serves as a window to the harsh reality the people of Ukraine are facing for nearly a year. The unimaginable hardships of individual stories and photos painting the picture of what countless Ukranians are going through.
Eddy van Wessel has a history of photographing war torn situations. He has photographed in Chechnya, Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. For some of his work he has used a black paint Leica M4. The black paint on a Leica camera was made famous by photographers who extensively used them to document history, where the photos left a mark on history. As an exchange, history leaves a mark on the cameras as well. Every scratch has a story to tell. The M4 is accompanied with a book, a letter and a signed print. Be sure to read the letter shown in the photographs, which opens some insight into Van Wessel’s relation with the camera.
